Ice fed lakes and camping under the stars…
From Banff our journey continues on another shorter but stunningly beautiful section. Along the seasonal Kananaskis highway we spin up and down the foothills of the Rockies, and camp in provincial parks. Beyond Pincher Creek we cross into Montana and the USA, entering the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.
After scaling the continental divide at the 2000 meter high Logan Pass and tenting next to Lake MacDonald we have a rest day in Kalispell. From there we head southeast down Highway 83 and along the Blackfoot River canyon, taking a dirt road shortcut en route to Helena, Montana’s capital which marks the end of this section. This small city’s main street is named Last Chance Gulch after the site of a gold discovery in 1864 and lies close to the winding path of the original gulch through the historic downtown district.
