The full tour will take 163 days, from July 11 to December 20, 2015 including 128 riding days, 32 rest days and 3 travel days on ferries in Patagonia. The average riding day will be about 110 km in length. It will pass through 6 countries: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina & Chile.
Food Accommodations & Support
The South American Epic Bicycle Expedition includes:
- 4 meals per/day on riding days (except for dinner on the night before a rest day)
- Nutritious roadside lunches on cycling days
- Sweep rider at back of group at all times for security
- Experienced staff including Tour leader, Medic, Bike Mechanic, Chef and Tour support as required. Staff includes Spanish speakers.
- Emergency communication systems
- Custom vehicles for transporting luggage and injured/sick/tired cyclists
- Professionally timed stage race
On all rest days plus many other nights we will stay in mid range hotels and motels. The rest of the time will be camping, sometimes in formal fully serviced campgrounds, but mainly in basic campgrounds or bush camps in remote areas. Built into the entry fee are hotel accommodations in Cartagena the night before the start of the tour and in Ushuaia on the night of the tour’s arrival. For sectional riders the entry fee includes hotel accommodation the night before and the night after your section (as long as your section begins and/or ends in a town with a scheduled hotel night).
The Freedom to Set your Own Pace
Our tours are designed to enable the participants to be independent and adventurous – with support staff available to provide assistance and advice whenever needed. You get the best of both worlds! On each riding day, small, but challenging situations will test your skills, like navigating your way through towns that you and your riding partners have never heard of. While some riders like to be the first ones to arrive at camp, others will cover the daily distances at a more leisurely pace, stopping to revel at beautiful mountain vistas, sample unusual wines in Chile, purchase souvenirs, or indulge in the ceviche and other delights at roadside stalls in Peru.
On the 32 scheduled rest days, you are free to create your own adventures – whether that means exploring UNESCO World Heritage sites, National Parks, museums, visiting gourmet restaurants, spas and hot springs, or just relaxing and sending mail home from the local internet cafe. You choose the activities that match your interests and your budget.
Short on holidays? – Join us for a few weeks instead
For those of you who have neither the time nor the inclination to cycle 14,000 km, the SA Epic is also divided into 9 shorter sections, lasting from 10 to 30 days, each with its own character and adventure. Whether it’s the remoteness of Patagonia, the majestic vistas throughout the Andes, the stunning and surreal landscapes of the Bolivian Salt Flat, the vineyards and lakes of southern Chile, the menacing row of volcanoes in Ecuador or the old colonial towns of Northern Argentina that you wish to explore on your bike, this tour offers you all those opportunities to choose from.
