Crossing Australia from east to west this trip travels through the most isolated areas of the country. Beginning in the tropical north near the Great Barrier Reef in the city of Cairns and ending in the West Australian capital, Perth.
The cycling route first follows the Savannah Way a series of roads that lead from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean. Both sealed and unsealed these roads travel through a whole range of stunning landscapes including World Heritage areas, historic goldmining towns, outback cattle stations, iconic Australian pubs, a wealth of indigenous culture and spectacular national parks.
We would be sharing the road with the odd 4WD as well as kangaroos, crocodiles and feral camels. Travelling through Katherine and into the remote Kimberly region the Savannah Way roads eventually lead to the pearl producing beach community of Broome.
From Broome the journey would head south along the West Australian coastline and the appropriately named 80 mile beach to Port Hedland. Turning inland the roads take us to Karijini National Park with its massive gorges, crystal clear rock pools and waterfalls.
Returning to the coast we pass through Ningaloo and Shark Bay with their amazing diversity of sea life before finishing in Perth.
There are few towns of significant size in this part of Australia which means the beaches are deserted and the road houses filled with local characters are pleased to see travellers, especially thirsty cyclists!

This tour looks great. A way to see parts of Australia rarely visited by tourists.

Should we be worried about the wind?

I like this tour. It is one of the few tours where I would only have to worry about staying on my bike and not worry about bombs or terrorists. I was wondering if we could ride longer each day to shorten the tour, which would attract more riders. 40-60 kms is a pretty short day. What is the total distance? Paved? Gravel? Trail? Estimates would work here.

Crocs would definitely be an issue as you cross the north especially through the Kakadu, but seasonality would be as much of an issue. Check out http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/ for weather info on Australia, you can also find here the wind roses that will give you prevailing winds and relative strengths for the 4 seasons, although in the north there are only two....wet and dry.
