5 Big African Cycling Stories in 2015

The 13th annual Tour d’Afrique cycling expedition just wrapped up in Cape Town last weekend, and we have seen that African cycling is having a big year! Unlike the sport in other parts of the world, it has also become a vehicle for positive change.

Here are 5 videos that are great examples of how African cycling is a thing, and it’s here to stay.

Team Rwanda

Since the 1994 genocide, the country of Rwanda has transformed and Team Rwanda under US coach Jock Boyer is a great example of the positive changes that have occurred. Team Rwanda recently released this short documentary by Oscar nominated director Orlando von Einsiedel.

Mark Beaumont #AfricaSolo

With a giant wave of social media followers, Mark is attempting to break the Cairo to Cape Town cycling record that has been challenged many times of late. He is currently in Zambia and on pace to break the record.

Lesotho Sky and other UCI Events

Development of cycling sport in Lesotho is at the heart of the Lesotho Sky Race. Lesotho Sky – a UCI sanctioned event – one of 30 UCI events in Africa.

MTN-Qhubeka in the Tour de France

South African pro team MTN-Qhubeka has been invited to participate in the 2015 Tour de France. The first Africa team ever to participate, promoting their #BicyclesChangeLives campaign which aims to get more disadvantaged kids in Africa on bikes.

Tour d’Afrique

African cycling isn’t only for professionals. We are the pioneers of group cycling across Africa. Tour d’Afrique has brought over 800 travellers to experience some of the most remote and misunderstood places in Africa and donated over 1500 bicycles to health care and community groups in Africa.
