Mummies in Mexico

If you have a taste for the macabre, a curiosity about the dead, and a vague interest in science you will probably love to visit the Museo de las Momias  in Guanajuato, Mexico. And you’ll be in luck if you are on TDA’s North American Epic, as it has a rest day in Guanajuato on October 22nd, a great excuse to get your creepy fix at this museum filled with mummies. (Even better – this section of the tour is now 30% off is you register before September 15th!) Guanajuato is located in North-Central Mexico and it is geographically part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, the Mexican Plateau and the Sierra Madre Oriental. The group of mummies, who have become a bit of a legend in Guanajuato, were originally buried in tombs above the ground during a cholera outbreak in 1833.  Later some bodies were exhumed and they had ‘magically’ become mummified.

Maybe not magic but it is speculated that the rich mineral content in the soil and extremely dry air had something to do with the petrifaction of the townsfolk. Today the mummies are well preserved and the museum has little sideshows featuring cheesy grave scenes and torture devises.  And the first mummy discovered, Doctor Remigio Leroy, welcomes you at the door! Maybe not everyone’s idea of a feel-good day out but certainly one you can scratch from your, ‘Creepy Things I have Seen’ list
