Rider Profile: Sigi Link (Full Tour)

profile

For posterity, tell us your full name, age occupation and anything you’d like to tell us about yourself.

Sigi Link, 44, software engineer, from Munich.

Do you have any favourite ride that you do there?

Yes, the one to my next beer garden.

Why did you choose the Silk Route bike tour for your next adventure?

Because of the cultural highlights and because it connects Europe and Asia. I’m on a sabbatical and in the last year I went from Europe to the Far East a few times, once on a plane in one day, once on a train taking one week and now I wanted to do it on bike, taking four and a half months.

What made you a little nervous about this trip?

Before we started I was nervous about the heat and the high altitude, but in a positive way. I was mostly excited about crossing all of China, including deserts and high mountains. Now I’m nervous every morning how the content of my daily bag magically increased volume over night and the zip won’t close again.

What has the highlight of the trip been so far?

Central Asia and following in the footsteps of Alexander the Great.

What kind of bike did you bring?

A KTM Mountain Bike. It’s a simple hard tail and I haven’t had any major issues so far, only three flats.

How have you been training? Do you feel prepared?

I didn’t have much time to train because I was travelling all the time before the trip started. While travelling I took every opportunity to get on a bike but that wasn’t much, one of my training rides was the downhill on the death road in Bolivia. I hiked in Nepal so that could count as altitude training.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone going on their first tour with us what would it be?

Don’t expect any luxury or cultural content. TDA will bring you to your destination, will feed you and make sure you have a place to sleep – day by day.
